THE MFFC BOWL - The Bowl of Champions

KL THU vs The Subang Tridents
by MR. Anonymous

The stage is set. In three days the champion of the nation will be crowned. Despite a roller-coaster of a season, KL's They Hate Us (THU) has once again made it to the big dance. Waiting to take THU's coveted title away from them are the Subang Tridents. Unlike previous years, the two teams in the finals have felt the bitter sting of defeat.

THU goes into the finals as heavy favorites as the return of QB #7 Shahir Khalid for the playoffs and the new addition of Emperor's RB Adi and DE Azwar Zaim led to their victory over the #1 seed, The Sunway Storm. In fact the game was so close that a safety in the dying minutes was the only play that separated the two teams. The champions have once again made themselves the team to beat in the finals.

In the regular season, Shahir's absence caused them to drop a game against the Rebellious Dawgs, leaving their playoff spot open till the very end of the season. Now with everything falling into place at the right time, THU will once again take the field to defend their title.

The Tridents have never made it to the finals in previous years. They made the playoffs in the first season but failed to do so last year. This year however, with the tutelage of former Dawgs RB Rafiq Hidayat, the Tridents have went from strength to strength. In their playoff game against the Rebellious Dawgs, the Tridents looked unstoppable on both sides of the ball, scoring 33 unanswered points.

The Tridents defense has been stellar for most of the season, coming up with the most interceptions as well as points scored on defense. On offense, the Tridents have an explosive passing game but they can also gash teams for big yards with their potent running game.

So as these two teams take center stage, it would mark the third meeting between these two teams this year and it probably promises to be the best one yet.

MFFL Playoffs (Semifinals) 2011

MFFL Playoffs 2011

Ladies and Gentleman, welcome to the arena of champions. Malaysia’s top four teams from the regular season are set to do battle as they vie for the championship and all the glory that comes with it.

Playoff bracket 1
#2 Subang Tridents (33) - #3 Rebellious Dawgs (0)

Tridents enter the playoffs once more matching their best result and trying to go one up on the Rebellious Dawgs. The Rebellious Dawgs came into the game as one of the best defensive teams and with QB #17 Shafiq “Super Stallion” Iqmal managing the offense with superb precision and the addition of the Phytons return specialist, The Dawgs look to make a run deep into the playoffs.

However, it was the Tridents that set the tempo from the kick off whistle. With WR/K #28 Hadry “Tricky Canon” Hyzan kick going for touchback, the Tridents defense played with deadly purpose, with DE’s #3 Logan “Wolverine” Soon and #69 Ian “SupaFreak” Sjahrial sent #17 Shafiq Iqmal into fits causing the Dawgs into some early mistakes, and after a failed fourth down attempt, the Tridents offense took the field with great field position.

Opening up with an 8 yard run by RB #5 Seth Ng, The Tridents offense would then find the endzone in just their second play, thanks to a TD run by WR #89 Andrew “Mr. Everything” Yong.

The Tridents special teams unit would then pin the Dawgs inside their five as the Tridents defense took the field. The Tridents defense would then come up big as LB #12 Leon “The Saint” Tham returned his 3 interception of the season for a TD.

The Tridents would then force the Dawgs offense to go 4 and out on their next drive. Tridents QB #10 Louie “The King” Peter would then find WR #89 Andrew, who makes a spectacular one-handed grab over CB #4 Andy, taking a 3 TD lead heading into the half.

The second half saw QB #10 Louie Peter march his offense down field, courtesy of TE #44 Anand Singam and RB #8 Alvin “The Boy Wonder” Ong. However, QB #10 Louie would throw his first interception of the season, with Dawgs FS #80 Muhammad “Chum” Zairulnizam making the interception.

The Dawgs offense would start the second half trying to establish their passing game with QB #17 Shafiq Iqmal trying to go to his top receiver WR #4 Andy. Tridents captain, CB #24 Carmen “The Island” Peter, would deny this from happening, locking down WR #4 Andy for no receptions in the entire game. Tridents DE 3# Logan Soon would make his mark on the score line, adding two points off a safety.

QB #10 Louie Peter would then connect on a 20-yard TD pass to WR #20 Heidy “Braveheart” Yusoff, who bags his 7th TD reception of the season. On the Tridents next offensive drive, back up QB #8, Alvin Ong sealed the deal with another TD to WR #28 Hadry Hyzan.

MFFL first Game ball of the Playoffs: Goes to the Tridents Offensive Line, who is playing their best football yet, despite having their usual center in a neck brace. The Tridents O-line unit did not give up a single sack against the Dawgs D-line.

3rd Annual MFFL 2011 (week 5) Game #10 -HIGHLIGHTS

Tridents vs Rebellious Dawgs
Venue: Sunway University Field
Date: 24th April 2011
Time: 11:00

Rebellious Dawgs (6) – Tridents (19)
By Mr. Anonymous

It’s almost play-off time people! Week 5 saw the Rebellious Dawgs try to continue their win streak against the Subang Tridents. The Tridents on the other hand are trying to bounce back after the thrashing that was handed to them by the Sunway Storm. With heavyweight defensive line-man Zairil “The Dawgfather” Ibrahim going up a stout Trident O-line, this game turned out to be a slug-fest.

The Tridents defense got off to a shaky start. With FS# 21 Khaleed Jaber only starting his second game and rookie sensation CB #80 Jonathan Galan unavailable for the game, Rebellious Dawgs QB #17 Shafiq “The Super Stallion” Iqmal hit WR #4 Andy for a go ahead TD. The Tridents’ Defense would then solidify, denying the Rebellious Dawgs the PAT.

On the following kick-off, LB #90 Ismail “Bruce Lee” Ma returned the kick-off the full length of the field, scoring a 60 yard kick return for a TD. The Tridents would then stop the Rebellious Dawgs offence, forcing and denying the 4th down try.

Tridents QB #10 Peter “The King” Louie would then lead his offense down field, capping it off with a TD to his top target this season, WR #20 Heidy “Braveheart” Yusoff. Tridents stalwart WR #89 Andrew “Mr. Everything” Yong would then reel in the PAT.

Tridents will then get another chance to score with one last play before the half. Louie Peter sent a long pass down field with Andrew Yong reeling in the pass at the corner of the endzone, keeping both feet in, and coming away with 6 points.

The second half was a game of defense as both teams failed to add to their tally till the final whistle.

3rd Annual MFFL 2011 (week 3) Game #6

The Pyhtons vs The Subang Tridents
Venue: Sunway University College Field
Date: 10th April 2011
Time: 13:00 pm

Phytons (7) – Tridents (46)
Written by Anonymous

Week 3 of the MFFL sees league newcomers, The Phytons, face off against the resurgent Subang Tridents. The Phytons have proven that they are not to be taken lightly as they have scored at least two TD’s in each of their games before facing the Tridents.

The Tridents on the other hand, came into the game fresh off their bye-week and looked to score early and often in the game.

The Tridents’ stellar defense jumped off to a rip-roaring start, with LB #12 Leon "The Saint" Tham returning a botched hand-off by the Phytons for a quick and easy six.

The Tridents defense would come up big again in the next Phytons possession, as rookie sensation, CB #80 Jonathan Galan, intercepted a pass on the sidelines, kept his feet inbounds and lost his pants in the process.

QB #10 Peter “The King” Louie then marched his troops steadily down the field. With the air raid led by WR #20 Heidy “Braveheart” Yusoff and RB #5 Seth Ng orchestrating the ground attack, the Tridents continually assaulted the Phytons defense.

The Tridents O-Line also put up a solid performance, protecting their field general from the various blitz packages sent by the Phytons, not allowing a single sack.

The Phytons would however come away with a consolation, scoring a TD before the end of the first half courtesy of RB #26.

This means that the Phytons have scored in all their games so far, a admirable feat for a team this young.

MFFL Game Ball: Goes to QB# 10 Peter “The King” Louie for his MVP like performance, treading the needle to 4 different receivers for TD’s

The Pyhtons vs Rebellious Dawgs
Venue: Taman Tasik Titiwangsa Field
Date: 3rd April 2011
Time: 13:00 pm

Pythons (12) – Rebellious Dawgs (20)
written by Anonymous

The Phytons grabbed the attention of the entire league as the newcomers managed to go toe-to-toe against the Sunway Storm for most of the game before faltering late in the second half. They face another tough challenge as they do battle with the Rebellious Dawgs, a merger between two of teams in last year’s playoffs, The Rebels and The Dawgs.

The Rebellious Dawgs, got off to their signature slow start as the Pythons scored on their opening drive with a blistering run. The R.Dawgs would then make their mark on the score board as QB #17 Shafiq “Super Stallion” Iqmal found an open receiver in the endzone.

The Pythons continued their strong special teams play, getting great field position on both offense and defense. However, the R.Dawgs’ stout defense, led by DE #15 Zairil “The Dawgfather” Ayu, held firm, only allowing the Pythons to score once more in the entire game.

The R. Dawgs would capitalize on errors made by the Phytons defense, scoring two more times, and earning their season opening win.

MFFL Game Ball: The line judge. He was apparently such a big fan of the Pythons, he couldn’t help cheering for them. He even joined them in their half time huddle. That’s what I call dedication.

3rd Annual MFFL 2011 (week 2) Game #4

Storm vs TheyHateUs
Venue: Taman Tasik Titiwangsa Field
Date: 3rd April 2011
Time: 11:00 am

MFFL Week 2 Highlights

Sunway Storm (20) – KL They Hate Us (20)

One would expect nothing less then spectacular football when these two teams take the field, as the Storm look to avenge their loss in last year’s championship game and perhaps hand the defending champions their second loss in a row. THU was looking to get back on track by putting their first win on the board.

From the kickoff whistle is was apparent that this game was going to be a physically grinding one as both these teams went at each other. It was THU’s offense that would get on the board first as QB #7 Shahir Khalid would connect with WR #80 Razeen “Air Force One” Khalid in the endzone.

The Storm would answer back with QB #9 Jeff Pelland connecting with a wide open WR #15 Jean De Villiers off a mean play fake taking THU’s defense by surprise. And thus began the battle of the Wide Receivers.

Razeen Khalid would find the endzone again as “Air Force One” continued the air raid on the Storms secondary while Jean De Villiers would keep the game close by returning THU’s kick-off for a TD just before the half. Both teams would find the endzone once more in the second half ending the game at 20 points apiece.

Ladies and Gents! The first OT period of the season! Both teams get a PAT attempt each to decide a winner. Should both teams fail to convert, the game ends as a draw.

Jeff Pelland made a crucial deflection on defense as Shahir Khalid tried to find Razeen Khalid once more to put the game on ice. Jeff would then connect on a short pass to Jean De Villiers in what looked to be a TD. The officials however ruled Jean down before the endzone, ending the game in a tie.

MFFL Game Ball: Goes to the both teams for providing the fans with an extremely entertaining game of football! A game this highly contested so early in the season makes waiting in the hot Sun totally worth it.

3rd Annual MFFL 2011 (week 1) Game #1

MAFFA Week 1 (game 1)
Storm (34) - Phytons (18)
by Mr.Cuz

The sun was out, the field was set, and the Malaysian Flag Football League 2011 (MFFL2011) got underway at 11am Sunday, March 27, 2011 with the Sunway Storm going up against KL Phytons.

If you thought teams would get jittery at the start of the season, you were proven wrong from the very first drive. The Storm went on offense first, and had no problems marching down the field, capped off by a touchdown and a 2 point conversion to take the lead 8-0.

It was the beginning of a shoot out, with the Storm scoring another 2 TDs and the Phytons countering with 3 TDs of their own to close the half with the Storm leading 20-18.

The heat of the midday sun began to take a toll on the players, as both teams were not as sharp as they were in the first half, trading empty possessions back-to-back until things fell apart for the Phytons defense. Sunway Storm then added 2 TDs to end the game 34-18, adding the first W for their season.

MAFFA GRIDIRON GAME BALL: The Great ol’ Sun. If the Storm could limit the Phytons attack in the second half, The Big Ball of Fire took on both teams, and she was ready for more!

MFFL week #1 THU (8) - TRI (18)

MFFL Week 1
Tridents (18) - THU (8)
by Anonymous

What a start to the season! Two of the best ranked teams from the pre-season tournament going head to head, in a battle filled with acrobatic catches, spectacular sideline runs and a solid display of defensive prowess.

THU comes into the game wanting to preserve their undefeated league record while the Tridents want to prove that the pre-season win against the defending national champions weren’t just a one off thing. Both teams however, are playing without key players in their starting line-up.

Tridents QB #10 Louie Peter started off well as he led the Tridents offense down into the redzone, courtesy of gashing runs by RB #5 Seth Ng, and picks by CB # 24 Carmen “The Island” Peter and LB #12 that gave the Tridents favorable field positions. THU’s Defensive unit, led by no other than QB/S #7 Shahir Khalid and WR/LB #80 “Air Force One” Razeen Khalid kept the Tridents out of the endzone during the first drive. This made it seem like the game was set to be a low scoring affair with the score being 8-6 at the half.

An interception by LB #12 Leon Tham was crucial as the Tridents offense capitalized off a 5 yard dump-off TD pass to the returning RB #8 Alvin “The Boy Wonder” Ong, with the team from Subang Jaya drawing first blood.

THU showed everyone in attendance the poise of a champion as WR #84 Ashraf Rusli kept his focus, capitalizing on a mistake by Trident’s rookie CB #80 Jon Galan, and evened up the score. THU would then convert a 2-point try, with THU going up 8-6 at the half.

In the second half the Trident’s defensive unit made their mark, pinning THU’s offense inside their own 10 and forcing them to punt the ball. That was the start of the Peter Brothers Show as QB #10 [called a HB pass thrown by RB #8 Alvin “The Boy Wonder” Ong that went for 54 yards with Heidy Yusoff (WR #20) hauling it in just a yard shy of the TD. Not one to leave business unfinished, he made a diving catch for the TD when Louie Peter threaded the needle into the endzone. This proved to be the final lead changing score of the game.

CB #24 Carmen Peter intercepted a pass meant for WR #80 Razeen “Air Force One” Khalid returning it about 15 yards allowing his brother to slot in a beautifully positioned ball for another TD that allowed Heidy Yusoff to display his awareness by making a diving sideline catch. {another pass to Heidy Yusoff for a TD. Carmen Peter would intercept the ball one more time, putting the game on ice, handing the defending champs their first loss in tournament.

MAFFA GRIDIRON GAME BALL: Carmen “The Island” Peter for his “Time-for-a-Defensive-MVP” like display, holding Razeen Khalid to a two reception and no TD performance and two key interceptions on the day.
